Networking for Fun and Profit

One day a man and a woman meet each other at a social event. The crowd’s mingling, the chatter is high and the music, perhaps, a little too loud. As they both approach the bar and are waiting for their drinks the man turns to the woman and introduces himself. They start talking and he asks her what she does for work, however due to the loud noise she doesn’t hear his question.

“What?” she replies

“What do you do for work?” he says

She replies.

With a little confused look he replies, “Oh, you work for Starbucks?”

She looks at him, “No, I said I work for a start-up!”

Feeling a little embarrassed he decides to continue the conversation and asks what brought her to this event.

She replies.

This time he has a little more than a confused look on his face.

“Pardon me, it’s a little loud in here.” He implies, hoping to get her response again.

She repeats herself.

“Oh, the start-up didn’t take off and now you’re not working?”

“No, I said I’m NETWORKING!”

I always love this story because it puts a humorous take on the fear most of us feel when initiating conversations at networking events. I know a lot of individuals who attend networking events but they have never been taught how to be successful at meeting new people.

One tip to being successful at networking is to be sincere. Many people decide to start networking when they are looking for a new job, a promotion, or the new business deal. In those situations we become attached to our results when networking rather that to what networking is really about, building new relationships.

What if networking wasn’t just about that promotion at work, or how to get that new business deal? What if it wasn’t about brown-nosing, sucking up or trying to rub elbows with the CEO? What if, instead, networking was about a broader attitude towards life, about sharing ideas and resources with other people and about building your own community of like-minded individuals?

The world is changing. The reality now is that you must create your own network to provide the stability that you want in life. The more people who know about you, your talents and your abilities, the more easily you will attract the opportunities, jobs, resources, people, ideas, money and results that you really want!

I help them explore ways you can always create positive results when networking, explore common beliefs about networking and construct a new, realistic view for each individual on what they would like networking to really be and how to apply it to their life.”
