Before sharing our six-step approach, let’s first define what is meant by approaching our career and out life from a heart and spirit perspective. Hearth and Spirit at work and in our personal life is best described as a special attitude we want to have towards our job and the people we interact with. By deciding to bring heart and spirit to our work, we have decided to:
- Be fair, equitable and honest in all of our dealings with other
- Show kindness and tolerance towards others whenever we can;
- Do the best job we can under all circumstances;
- Focus on the positive qualities of others instead of their faults;
- Listen and support others when they encounter difficulties;
- Help others develop, grow and realize their full potential;
- Serve others wholeheartedly within the scope of our work roles;
- Lead by example walk the talk;
- Contribute as best we can to the success of our employer
- Make decisions for the collective good of everyone involved;
- Be completely dependable and reliable during our working hours;
- Show respect and consideration for others;
Our Six-Step Program:
Our six-step career planning program is designed to be very helpful to clients in setting their short-term and long-term career goals.
- Step 1: Defining Careers for Heart and Spirit, will lead you to develop a clear understanding of what a meaningful career for “heart and spirit” means to you. Later on, as they review career options, they will need to ensure that these options support your own definition of a meaningful career.
- Step 2: Know Yourself, will help you identify your strengths, skills, special gifts and motivators. We all have an enormous number of strengths, skills, special gifts and motivators which can lead us to become successful in a wide variety of careers. This second step will also lead you to decide the attributes they want to use to help you achieve a meaningful career for “heart and spirit.”
- Step 3: Expanding the Options. This is the time to expand and research alternative career options. These can be both employment and self-employment careers. We encourage individuals to be extremely open minded in step three in order not to overlook any potential careers. This is not the time to restrict your imagination and limit the possibilities. There will be plenty of time to shorten your lists later on in step five of the program.
- Step 4: Personal Circumstances, involves carefully reviewing your personal and financial situation. If you are making a career change, it is realistic to expect a reduction in your income at least during the initial period especially if you need to go back to school or take specialized training to prepare themselves for a different occupation. We'll help you determine the minimum income you will will need in order to maintain an acceptable standard of living. Personal and financial circumstances are very important here.
- Having reviewed their career options, many of our clients may want to make a change, but their personal financial circumstances may prohibit them from doing so immediately. They must now carefully plan their finances in order to make the change. And although they may have retained their career direction for a while, this does not mean that they could not change employers in order to be happier in their jobs. Nor does it mean that they can not take some steps to make their work more enjoyable and meaningful. Having a career for the “heart and spirit” has many implications which we discuss throughout this program.
- Step 5: Reducing the Options, involves first defining your work environment preferences: where they want to work and live, your working hours and whom they specifically want to serve in your new occupation. They will then narrow down the career options from the list they established in step three, to ten career options which best meet your overall needs. These needs include using your special gifts, the specific strengths and skills they identified earlier, your motivators, your financial circumstances and your work environment preferences. As part of reducing the options, they will then conduct extensive research on these ten occupations by interviewing a number of individuals who are involved in these types of occupations and who love what they do. This will help you develop a better understanding of the opportunities that each of these remaining ten career options provide. After you complete the research, it will be time for you to make a decision about your career path.
- Step 6: Taking Action, which involves converting your new career goals into specific action plans which will eventually lead to the successful implementation of your goal. Careers for Heart and Spirit will help you clarify the practices and actions you'll want to incorporate in your daily life in order to make your work a balanced, heart-expanding and spiritual experience.
